what's going on with viki?

a lil while ago i had the bright idea of trying my hand at writing subtitles on viki (japanese to english since i'm trying to practice) but it seems something is different now, i'm guessing because of my region?

i noticed a couple of things:
one) there aren't many japanese shows at all and from what i saw there's precisely one that's currently looking for subs
two) only the viki standard pass exists as an option for me. surely they can't have removed the other options?

General likes: I love world-building and character explorations. I also love intimacy and care and softness for my favorite characters. But at the same time whump and hurt/comfort are good and so is just hurt or just comfort.

I enjoy crime and mystery, so casefic is one of my favorite genres, along with romance.

I like obscure details and pretty words; and enjoy reading about feelings and thoughts.

I adore competent characters, loyalty (and power couples).

Since nearly all my requests relate to Batman, I'll say that I typically prefer a Bruce/Batman who is caring but serious, sometimes soft around the people he loves but severe against a threat, someone who has been through a lot of darkness but isn't dragged down by it anymore.

Regarding Clark, I love how much love and hope he has inside him. I love how he cares for everyone. I also love moments when he doubts himself and questions everything.

Barbenheimer...totally-not-a-review with spoilers

Do you guys ever think about dying?

A week ago I saw Barbie and yesterday I saw Oppenheimer. I really liked both. I knew I'd like Oppenheimer because I'd been eagerly waiting for it since last year but Barbie turning out to be a good movie was a complete surprise.

I went to see Barbie with my mom; it was her initiative actually (or I would've waited for the movie to come out...online :3). We both liked it a lot,,,except I took issue with two jokes, but I'll elaborate on those in a bit.

When I initially heard about this movie—years ago when they were filming—I wasn't impressed nor excited and I thought it wouldn't be worth watching; I didn't think anyone could possibly come up with a good story. Then this year suddenly everyone was talking about how great it is and how it's a must-watch. And then my mom was like, "Let's go see it!" So I went and, well, wow!

Okay, now onto Oppenheimer. We went with both my parents. It was just gonna be my dad and me initially but then my mom expressed a desire to come after hearing good reviews.

I expected it to be good and it was good. I don't have too much to say here. I'm not sure how true to reality it is and I'm not all that great at phsysics (not that the movie requires it) so I wouldn't know if something was egregiously wrong. Hearing that Oppenheimer wasn't as good at math as colleagues in the field wanted/expected him to be was nice for me personally, because I have math-related trauma.

There's one scene that really struck me.

I was looking to have a good time with these movies and I did, so mission accomplished. Now to pick what movie I'll watch next...probably not at the cinema though. (It's very likely it might be Hypnotic with Ben Affleck, who I'm still into because I can't get over his Bruce Wayne.)

Jokey title aside, I wanted to share these serious videos because they resonate with my feelings.

Big thanks goes to my father who, about a month ago, I caught watching a video of Rowan Atkinson give this speech and sparked my interest in looking up the full thing. I'm embedding it below, but for anyone that doesn't feel like watching a video, here's a transcript.

A couple of quotes that stood out to me:

a culture that...with the reasonable and well-intended ambition to contain obnoxious elements in society, has created a society of an extraordinarily authoritarian and controlling nature.

We need to build our immunity to taking offense, so that we can deal with the issues that perfectly justified criticism can raise. Our priority should be to deal with the message, not the messenger.

And then youtube recommended me the following short video. For anyone who prefers to read, check out the transcript on youtube, it's accurate.

I particularly liked the closing lines.

You put something out there, you paint a watercolor, you make a joke, you make a television show, whatever it is. If people are offended, that's their problem. It's not yours. You've done your bit. [...] I'm a great believer that if a joke has an appreciative audience, no matter how small, no matter who they are, then it is worthy. It should be, as it were, allowed.

Obviously, the first is aimed at the British government and the second is mainly about comedy but I feel like they still apply to art and writing in a broader sense.

N.b. Racism is bad and ao3/otw should do better to take care of its volunteers and the people reporting they were harassed. However a campaign that strongly and immediately turns against and alienates anyone who questions even small parts of it is flawed.

Current events and all that...

Before I do anything else tonight, I want to share nianeyna's script for bulk downloading fics from ao3. You run the script, it asks a few questions of setup and then you give it a link (e.g. a user's works list or a gifts page, etc.) and it starts downloading. GITHUB LINK and this is their tumblr post about it.

The instructions on github are pretty good. There's an explanation for Windows and for mac (but it should probably work on Linux as well...maybe with some editing for your specific system).

(It works for me on Windows 10 with python 3.10.0. If you didn't have python before, when installing python make sure the tickybox for PATH is ticked or else this won't work.)

Disclaimer: I'm in no way affiliated with the script or its OP. I'm only sharing a tool I found useful.
