Day 1 of 30 Days of Guardian: Favorite episode

I'm going to start this meme off with the one answer I'm completely sure of–my favourite is episode seven. There's plenty of scenes in other episodes that I love to bits but here is where the magic happened for me. As I mentioned in my Love and Frienship meme fill on sundial_exchange, this was where I fell in love with this drama. So, how did it go?

It was a couple of days after I'd started the show, extremely late at night, perhaps even early morning, somewhen in early June 2019. I was already intrigued by the premise, had looked up some information about the characters and was generally enjoying myself. I knew Shen Wei was old as fuck had met Zhao Yunlan a very, very long time ago and had deep feelings for him.
 

I wasn't expecting to see those feelings though. The plot synopsis promised everything I ever wanted out of a show. Guardian gave me so much more. Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong gave us so, so much.

 

But back to the point, episode seven. From Shen Wei getting mugged and obediently handing over all his stuff (his hilariously empty wallet if not for the, I googled it back then, apparently the 100RMB note is pink-ish, fuckton of money he carries around) to his necklace being found and that's not okay, so it's time to fight but wait! There's Zhao Yunlan just in time to save the damsel in distress! Wonderful scene.
 

And then, the part that kicked my ass and stole my heart–the talk in Shen Wei's apartment. It's cute, it's flirty, it's filled with sexual tension and then Shen Wei puts medicine on Zhao Yunlan's hand and he flinches. My brain logs this important information for later as I finish watching the scene.
 

The case begins and it's interesting, but it's also super late, so I hit pause midway through the episode and go to bed. All is calm. All is silent.

So, I'm lying there in my bed, covers over my head, ready to surrender to sleep and my brain throws the following Shen Wei thought at me, "This is the first time I'm touching you in ten thousand years and I make you flinch away."

...

Knife.

Plunges.

Inside.

Heart.

...

*insert pained screaming*

Now, I know that Zhao Yunlan is probably just shocked at getting touched by the pretty professor and that's why he flinches but Shen Wei is Shen Wei and I'm convinced that his first reaction to Zhao Yunlan's flinch is real panic.

Okay. Somehow after this I manage to fall asleep and wake up the next day and finish the episode, which was nowhere near done with me.
 

I enjoyed myself the Lin Jing centered case–it was really nice, I like him very much, but then! More Weilan feels.
 

"He and the monster he wrote about are the same person," Zhao Yunlan says and Shen Wei really doesn't like hearing Dixingren being referred to as monsters. Look at that face.
 

But then Zhao Yunlan finishes his thought and there is logic in it and it's not what it first sounded like and Shen Wei agrees.
 

Quick intermission for something like a bit of fourth wall breaking ("Hey, who knows, maybe we're also characters in someone else's book right now," Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong snort at each other) and we get back to Shen Wei bleeding feelings through his the look in his eyes:
 

"I never would've thought that you would say these words to me today. And even more, I wouldn't have expected that you would one day empathize with the helplessness of Dixingren."
 

Ahh, the joy of being understood and accepted by the one you love. If Shen Wei could get an erection in his heart, he would get one right then.
 

If you ask me, this is one of the biggest give-aways for his secret identity. Evidenced by Zhao Yunlan immediately testing Shen Wei ("I keep having a feeling that rain is coming to Dragon City,") by paraphrasing the Black Cloaked Envoy's words from episode one, "The weather is changing."
 

Anyway, once again, Knife. Plunges. Inside. Heart. *insert screaming*
 

From then on I was hooked.

AAAUGGGHHH. And I hadn't noted Shen Wei's expression on the "monster" line before, oh wow.
